Oakland Police tossed concussion grenades, shot wooden block munitions and rubber bullets, at American Citizens, and Union Members, Wounding many, many, many at this Oakland, California, gathering.

Around 500 people, (People Rallying against some of, George W. Bush's, 'Governance Policies', including his, Bush Iraq War.), these People, had set up a peaceful picket shouting "Union Yes! War No!" at American Presidential Lines because it ships military cargo and Stevedoring Services of America docks because it stands to profit from the war through a contract to run the docks in Um Quasr after the war in Iraq.

Representatives of the International Longshore and Warehouse Union determined that they would not cross the picket line because the police presence presented a threat to their members' health and safety, thereby shutting down the morning shift on the docks.

The decision proved correct as minutes later, cops charged motorcycles into peaceful picketers and union members, threw concussion grenades at them and then opened fire with high velocity wooden block munitions.

Sue Sandlin, former co-chair of the Port Workers Solidarity Committee, described the action.

"The police came down the street towards us in a military formation. American Citizens Rallying there had actually decided to take down the picket because their plan was to have a peaceful protest on public property. We were trying to figure out how to disperse because the cops had blocked the entrance that most of us had used to get to the gates of the docks. We began walking away from the police lines, trying to get to the sides of the road. Then police opened fire. People were being shot in the back as they tried to get away. Me and my friend dove into a ditch and she was hit by a rubber bullet. There were people dropping after being hit and there were explosions all around from the police percussion grenades. I was afraid people were being killed. The police were firing indiscriminately, at the, (American Citizens who had come to Rally for Freedom and Justice, and in a most lawful manner, against President George W. Bush's Governance, and his possible illegal actions, including his, Bush Iraq War.) These American Citizens were fleeing the, Police, the Government Officials, who were sworn to protect the Citizens of the United States, but, instead were now being assaulted and terrorized by them. Also Union Workers were stopped in their cars in the middle of the street. It was one of the most terrifying experiences I've ever had. After the initial shock wore off, everyone was appalled by the police and concerned for the people who had been wounded. So we tended to the people who had fallen and then we regrouped in an effort to get out as safely as possible in order to regroup later."

Trent Willis, a business agent for the International Longshore and Warehouse Union, told the Associated Press, "They shot my guys. We're not going to work today. The cops had no reason to open up on them."

Police arrested 24 (American Citizens who had come to Rally for Freedom and Justice, and in a most lawful manner, against President George W. Bush's Governance, and his possible illegal actions, including his, Bush Iraq War.), including ILWU Local 10 Business Agent Jack Heyman.

As Heyman was dragged away in handcuffs, wearing his ILWU jacket, he shouted, "I'm a union official. I have the right to represent my members!"

Regina, "After the cops charged us, I dove into a ditch and that's when they shot me in the elbow. Some fucking democracy! we can't even have a peaceful picket!"

Steve Stallone, spokesman for the ILWU who was present at the protest said, "Clearly this was an inappropriate use of force. The police shot the union workers, they were supposedly there to protect. If they had wanted to keep people away from the docks, they could have just put up a barricade a half mile away. They never needed to shoot at what was clearly a non-violent action."

In fact, the police response was no spontaneous over reaction.

For at least 15 minutes, police formed lines, calmly aimed at fleeing American Citizens and fired, and fired, and fired, and fired, and fired, and fired.

The Police, and other Government Personnel, came prepared to use a massive level of violence in order to intimidate the, (peaceful American Citizens and Union members, Rallying against what, President George W. Bush is doing, that is believed to not only be harmful to America and the World, but, that is believed to be illegal and unconstitutional, including his, Bush Iraq War.), and to assault them to such an extent that they would never again attempt to Rally for Freedom and Justice, and have their voices heard on the docks at this location.

* As an update: The Oakland Police Department has since this event, paid out over eleven million dollars in civil settlements with more settlements expected soon. Investigations of possible, State and Federal, intergovernmental illegal actions are on going.

Who are they?

After the initial George Bush Warring in Afghanistan in 2001, that still continues to this day, the U. S. military took al-Qaeda and Taliban suspects to the island of Cuba for questioning.

At the moment over 500 prisoners from 40 or more countries are being held.

Nine Britons were among the prisoners. Five of these were released and returned to the UK in 2004. The other four, Moazzam Begg, Feroz Abbasi, Richard Belmar and Martin Mubanga flew back to the UK in 2005.

How did the US military decide who to take?

Prisoners from the Afghan war got taken to Cuba if they fitted any of these three descriptions.

1. They were foreign (not an Afghan).
2. They were trained by, 'al Qaeda'.
3. They had been in charge of more than 300 fighters.

Why Cuba?

The US government said Afghanistan was not suitable because the facilities there were not good enough.

In October 2002, I voted for the resolution to authorize the Administration to use force in Iraq.
I voted for it on the basis of the evidence presented by the Administration, assurances they gave
that they would first seek to resolve the issue of weapons of mass destruction peacefully through
United Nations sponsored inspections, and the argument that the resolution was needed because
Saddam Hussein never did anything to comply with his obligations that he was not forced to do.

Their assurances turned out to be empty ones, as the Administration refused repeated requests
from the U.N. inspectors to finish their work. And the "evidence" of weapons of mass destruction
and links to al Qaeda turned out to be false.
